MAKOGAI PRIMARY SCHOOL REBUILT WITH ASSISTANCE FROM TYREPOWER

Tyrepower recently partnered with NGO, Sea Mercy Fiji, in lending a helping hand to rebuild the lives of the people of Makogai, one of the many Fijian islands badly affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston in February this year.

Classed as a Category 5 storm, Tropical Cyclone Winston was the strongest storm to have ever hit land in the Southern Hemisphere, tragically damaging entire villages with torrential rain, storm surges and wind gusts of up to 325 km/h.

Included in the devastation was Makogai Primary School, which houses 38 children and acts as the main building on the island, was sadly destroyed at the time of the cyclone. Only four buildings on the island survived Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Tyrepower Limited held its annual international conference in Fiji during April. After seeing the devastation of Tropical Cyclone Winston, Tyrepower Dealers, along with staff and suppliers, sought to assist the country in rebuilding and banded together to raise a total of AUD $95,000.

The funds raised by Tyrepower were donated to the Makogai Primary School to assist the island community in rebuilding their much-loved school, allowing the children to return to learning in a safe, happy and healthy environment.

The rebuild of the Makogai Primary School, its classrooms and facilities has now been completed, with the funds provided by Tyrepower going towards building materials and supplies for the school, students and workers. The students are now enjoying the new facilities they have access to.

“We are extremely pleased Tyrepower’s Australasian Dealer Network and suppliers were able to provide Fiji, and specifically the Makogai community, with some assistance to rebuild during this difficult time,” Tyrepower CEO, David Wilson said.

“Following our international conference in Fiji this April and seeing the destruction caused by Cyclone Winston, we wanted to provide some much-needed relief to the community during the difficult time they were facing. Our international conference in Fiji was the best time to do this.”

“During the restoration of the Makogai Primary School, the children of the community attended class in a temporary classroom and showed the utmost resilience and positivity despite being left with very little following the cyclone. We have been absolutely touched by the strength and spirit shown by the entire community.”

The funds raised by Tyrepower were also used by Sea Mercy Fiji to hire vessels to deliver much needed food, clothing and basic necessities to the islands affected by the cyclone.
